How to Build Trust in a Relationship

Relationships that are based on the foundation of implicit trust are perhaps the happiest and most satisfying ones. Trust cannot be built through the efforts of just one person; both people in the relationship have to work together to ensure they can trust each other. This will let the relationship be everything you want it to be. There is not going to be any relationship at all without trust and this is something you have to understand and accept. There are a number of things you need to do if you want your loved one to trust you and they are discussed here:

  1. Stay faithful

First things first, you have to stay faithful to your partner. Lack of loyalty is going to damage your relationship rather quickly. When you have made a commitment, you should learn to stick it. If you are not happy with your relationship, you need to share this with your partner so you can get counseling or break it off mutually. However, cheating is disrespectful and your relationship may not be able to recover from it. Moreover, you also need to be emotionally faithful and not just physically.

  1. Give your partner some room

Yes, you are in a relationship, but this is no excuse to crowd your partner. Everyone needs their own space and so do you. You cannot make someone account for every minute of every day. Doing that is like boxing them in and it will drive them away. Bear in mind that trust can only develop in an atmosphere of safety and security. You will undermine the trust if you hurt each other physically or verbally. Don’t try to control everything as this is a sign of mistrust and no one likes clinginess.

  1. Don’t have ulterior motives for love

Obviously, both of you want to make sure that you are loved for who you are and not for the wrong reasons. You should never have an ulterior motive for loving someone like their money, looks or even their family. You need to be with your partner with the right reasons if you hope to build trust in your relationship.

  1. Give top priority to your relationship

When you are in the trust-building phase of your relationship, you need to give it priority over everything else. Since there is still not much trust, the other person is going to find it difficult not to feel neglected when you are busy elsewhere. You shouldn’t take them for granted at any cost and try not to dedicate all your time and energy to other people and activities. If the relationship is important to you, it is necessary for you to show it.

  1. Always be reliable

How do you expect to build trust in a relationship if you cannot be relied upon? Trust is simply another way of saying that you are relying on someone else. There are certain things that you must do for your partner at all times as this will build security in a relationship. Consistency is also important in this regard. For instance, if you come home at a specific time and cannot make it, then you should inform them. Not doing so will indicate that your needs are more important than theirs and this will breed mistrust.

  1. Speak the truth

Never say anything if you don’t mean it or is not true. If the truth comes out later, you will be proven a liar and your partner’s trust will be broken. They will not believe anything else you say, even if it might be true.

Following these instructions will gradually help you in building trust in a relationship.
