For decades, one of our most widely shared tenets of conservatism was fiscal restraint, reining in government spending, and cutting the deficit. Leaving our children and grandchildren with mountains of debt was blatantly irresponsible and we would not let it happen on our watch.
But the recent announcement from the Treasury Department about our record deficit has me wondering: Have we lost our way?
Paul Ryan was the one of our most righteous warriors for a balanced budget and yet he’s leaving Congress with a troubling legacy: a $779 billion deficit, up 17% from last year. Our national debt is barreling towards $22 trillion. TRILLION!
Is this the “path to prosperity” Ryan promised? I’m not sure.
Here’s Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell completely refusing to take responsibility for our runaway debt:
“It’s disappointing, but it’s not a Republican problem.”
Is it time for a return to true conservative principles?
